What to do BEFORE your tattoo
You have an exciting day ahead of you, you're getting a tattoo! Congratulations! Now what to know before you arrive to your appointment:
1.) DO NOT consume alcoholic beverages the night before your appointment or the appointment day. [Alcohol is a blood thinner and makes it difficut to pack beautiful color into the skin with a constant flow pushing out]
2.) DO Make sure you eat something before hand and bring any snacks you may want to munch on durring your tattoos. [Snacks can reduce blood pressure and keep your sugar levels up while your body is being fuled with adrenaline]
3.) Bring comfy clothing and anything that may help you stay comfortable, i.e.: light jackets or sweaters/ small blanket, pillow if you choose. Bring something to keep you occupied, you will be sitting still for a while so it helps to have something to occupy your time, some great things are Headphones, nintendo switch, a book to read, your phone to watch whatever you please, (if you are watching movies be sure to bring headphones to be courtious to other clients.
4.) If you are using a numbing agent, please make sure to run it by your artist as some products affect the skins elasticity while tattooing. You will also want to contact your artist to make sure that the product is being applied correctly, with ample time to work. Most numbing agents do not work very well or at all for those with natural red hair as they have a higher tollerance for lidocane.
5.) Finally,DO make sure you are well rested and bathed. Clients are usually able to sit longer and not in as much pain if they rest the day before. When the body is already tired it can further stress your body to put it in pain. Bathing ensures a clean area to work on and lets face it, if your artist showers to be in close contact all day, you should return the favor.
What to do AFTER your tattoo
Congratulations on your new tattoo! Now how do you heal it?
1.) First and formost you want to keep that tattoo clean! In order to do that you will need a bottle of dial antibacterial soap in the liquid pump. [Any antibacterial hand pump soap will work as long as its antibacterial].
You will wash your tattoo with clean hands 4-6 times a day, thats every 4-6 hours, not including sleeping.
*For the first 2-3 nights while you sleep you will want to keep your tattooed covered securely in fresh serran wrap. [While you sleep your body does its most healing, this will cause the tattoo to weep fluid (blood and plasma) if that fluid gets to dry to your sheets and bedding it will adhere/ fuse to it and you will have a terrible time becoming unstuck.
2.) After your first night, gently remove the serran wrap and be sure to thouroughly clean all the blood and plasma off your tatoo with clean hands and a gentle rubbing motion. [ The blood and plasma will become mixed with any excess ink that has pushed out and will likely be a slimy puddle, make sure you clean your skin until you can feel your skins natural texture and that slick feeling is gone.] and pat dry with a clean paper towel.
3.) You will want to apply a very very small amount of A & D or Aquaphore [found in any drug store] to your tattoo after washing and drying for the first 2-3 days only. You DO NOT want to see your tattoo shining, use like sunblock and make sure it is not globbed ontop of your skin but rubbed in, remember, you are using this to keep your tattoo from drying out, not as a protective film.
4.) DO NOT scratch, pick, or peel your tattoo. As your skin heals it should react like a sunburn. The skin will tighten, start to crack and flake off. Durring this time your skin will be very itchy, you can use a colorless scentless lotion like Aveno or Lubriderm to keep you skin quenched durring this time.
5.) After your tattoo is done peeling it will still be sensitive because the skin is still healing sub dermally even though the outer most layer is healed. At this time, you want to avoid direct sunlight as this new skin is suseptible to sunburn. Make sure to use sunblock to prevent sun damage to your skin and artwork.
Long term sun damage will not only affect your skin, but will severly degrade the quality of your art. If you've invested the money, time and pain to get tattooed, make sure you're protecting it long term from the effect of the suns rays.
